The European Commission and Europa Nostra have announced the winners of the 2024 European Heritage Awards. These prestigious awards, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, recognize outstanding heritage projects and individuals from across Europe.

This year, 26 winners from 18 countries were selected for their exceptional contributions to heritage preservation and promotion. The winners represent a diverse range of projects in five categories. These include a unique renovation project led by former miners in Poland, an innovative AI research project for improving access to Europe’s newspaper heritage, a successful training program reviving traditional craftsmanship for contemporary construction needs in Greece, a visionary community-driven effort reclaiming urban heritage in Ghent, Belgium, and a civil society association raising awareness of the cultural heritage of the World Heritage City of Dubrovnik, Croatia, for more than 70 years.

The winners exemplify the dynamism, diversity, and innovation demonstrated across Europe in efforts to safeguard and promote our rich heritage. The awards were selected by a jury composed of 12 heritage experts from across Europe, after evaluating the applications submitted by the selection committees. A total of 206 eligible applications were received from organizations and individuals from 38 European countries.

Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, emphasized the importance of cultural heritage as a collective treasure that connects our past, present, and future. She praised the winners for their outstanding achievements and highlighted the crucial role of exemplary projects and individuals dedicated to preserving and promoting our heritage.

Cecilia Bartoli, the world-renowned mezzo-soprano and President of Europa Nostra, congratulated this year’s winners on their well-deserved recognition. She emphasized the commitment to protecting our shared cultural heritage and called for their inspiring examples to be followed by citizens, heritage professionals, volunteers, public organizations, and private companies across Europe and beyond.

The winners will be celebrated at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony 2024, taking place on October 7th at the Romanian Athenaeum, the most prestigious concert hall in Bucharest, Romania. The event will be co-hosted by European Commissioner Iliana Ivanova and Europa Nostra’s Executive President Hermann Parzinger. During the ceremony, the Grand Prix laureates and the Public Choice Award winner, chosen from among this year’s winners, will be honored.
